Meme's Brick Street Bakery
Meme's Brick Street Bakery - Petit Fours, oatmeal cookies, blueberry cupcakes... Um, yes. Please. And let's not forget the brownies.
One day last week I had the rare and luxurious pleasure of finding myself out of the house with nowhere to be. So of course, I went exploring. And what better to discover than Meme's Brick Street Bakery?
Petit Fours, oatmeal cookies, blueberry cupcakes... Um, yes. Please.
And let's not forget the brownies.
It's hard to say which was more inviting-- the elegantly piped buttercream frosting, or the 143 year old historic home where it was found. Tall ceilings, rich wood floors, and beautiful bold colors drew me in. But it was the smell of freshly baked cookies that kept me there. And the lovely conversation, with owner Teresa Smith--better known as Meme.
I thought you'd like to get to know her too.
Hi, Meme! Wait... Are you Meme?
Yes I am Meme. I am Meme to 6 wonderful and beautiful granddaughters.
Are you a native of Clinton? If not, where are you from and what brought you here?
I was born and raised in Jackson but have lived in Clinton for 40 years
How long has Meme's Brick Street Bakery been open?
We have been open for 1 1/2 years
Why open a bakery? What was your creative vision?
I have decorated cakes for over 40 years for family and friends. My dream has always to have my own bakery. I felt like Clinton needed one. I wanted a place where people could come sit down and enjoy a cupcake or a petit four. For moms to bring their children and enjoy.
What did you do before you opened Meme's?
I was pastor/financial secretary at Parkway Baptist church
What is your favorite Meme's treat?
Probably the chocolate brownies and chocolate chip cookies
In your opinion, what is it that separates an average cupcake from a GOOD cupcake?
You want a cupcake to be moist and just the right amount of icing. An icing that complements the flavor of the cake
Do you come up with the flavors/recipes yourself? And how does that process work?
We brainstorm then it's just trial and error
Have you ever made a flop-cupcake? (It's hard to imagine!) And if so, what flavor and why was it a flop?
We tried to make a pink lemonade and just couldn't get it the way I wanted
This old home is beautiful. Can you tell us a little about its history?
It was built in 1872. It was originally across the street were the police station is.
The bakery is beautifully decorated. Is that one of your other talents?
No not my talent. My daughter-in-law decorated it
What services do you offer in addition to your delicious ready-to-go under the counter goodies?
I also make specialty cakes. Such as birthday, baby, bridal shower cakes. I rent the bakery for birthday parties, graduation parties, showers, rehearsal dinners and other events
Is it okay for your customers to linger, maybe to sit and visit over a cup of coffee?
I love for people to stay and visit anytime. Many people do this daily.
What has been the best part of opening Meme's so far?
The people that come in and I get to meet
long hours some days
What can we expect from Meme's in the future? New treats? Baking classes? A Lunch menu?
Always coming up with new treats. Yes I want to offer decorating classes
Well, I certainly can't wait to see what she's baking up next. But until then, stop on by and grab her cupcake flavor of the month, Cinnamon Toast... The perfect companion to a cup of coffee and a cool September afternoon.
